Phosphoric acid esters are the esters of orthophosphoric acid. They are created when orthophosphoric acid reacts with alcohols and splits off water. The viscous to solid crystalline substance is used, among other things, as an emulsifier, plasticizer or flame retardant.

Phosphoric acid esters are multifunctional. They have an emulsifying effect, can be used as a mild source of acid in the decomposition of dyes, are anti-corrosive when neutralized, are used in lubricants as extreme pressure additives (EP additives) or anti-wear additives (AW additives), and act as dispersion additives. Moreover, the adhesion-promoting, anti-corrosive and cleansing effect of phosphoric acid esters is used in various applications.
